A Boy and His Dog Can't Hold a Candle to a Girl and Her T-Rex in Oni's Terrible Lizard

Terrible LizardThe creator of The Sixth Gun gives readers a fun, kid-friendly story about a young girl and her loyal companion - who just happens to be a Tyrannosaurs Rex in Terrible Lizard ($19.99, 978-1-62010-236-7) from Oni Press.

The touching story of a girl and her T-Rex... with a healthy dose of collateral damage and monster conflict on the side. When the scientists of Cosmos Labs punch a hole through time and space, they pull a ferocious dinosaur into the present. The dinosaur imprints on teenage Jessica, proving to be more mischievous than vicious. But he is not alone. Strangely mutated prehistoric monsters begin attacking our world. What's a girl and her dinosaur-fighting dinosaur supposed to do?

Terrible Lizard is a graphic novel whose absurd premise is sure to delight even the most jaded comic reader. Fans of action-oriented comics or giant monster battles won't be disappointed or want to miss out as this comic looks to be pure fun. Plain and simple. Terrible Lizard will have no problem finding an audience with older and younger readers because who hasn't at some point in their life wanted a dinosaur to pal around with and do their bidding?

Writer Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Deadpool) discusses his new series here:

Diamond: For those who might be new to your comic book, give a quick rundown. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

Cullen Bunn: Terrible Lizard is the story of a girl and her dinosaur. In this fun, sweet, action-packed story, we meet Jess, a lonely teenage girl whose father is running the time displacement project at a top secret government research facility. She doesn't completely understand what "time displacement" means... until the experiments bring a T-Rex from the past into our world. The dinosaur seems fearsome at first, but it quickly bonds with Jess. The girl names the big lizard "Wrex" and the two of them embark on some wild adventures.

This is an all-ages book, and I think adults as well as kids will get a kick out of it.

What has been your favorite part of the book or character to tackle?

I have to admit, I love the way Drew draws Wrex, the dinosaur. He puts so much personality into the T-Rex, it's impossible not to love the beast.

What other titles would you associate with your book? "If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title"?

I'd say if you like Godzilla or Devil Dinosaur or Super Dinosaur, you'll probably find something to like in Terrible Lizard.

What's your favorite thing about working in comics?

I love telling stories, and I want those stories to be read. Working in comic books gives me the chance to tell dozens of tales in a wide range of genres.

Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

It's a little murky for me. I vaguely remember reading an old issue of X-Men (the original team) when I was very young. Maybe the first issue of a comic that really stuck with me, though, was Avengers #154, which freaked me out because I thought the Avengers had been killed in the issue. But it was Micronauts #7 that was the comic book that made me love comic books.

Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming?

In Terrible Lizard, Jess and Wrex are in for a hair-raising adventure. Because of the strange radiations surrounding Wrex, wormholes to the past are opening up around him, and bizarre mutant creatures are spilling into our world. Only Wrex and Jess stand between these creatures and humanity. So there will be plenty of monster vs. monster action, lots of humor, and some truly heartfelt moments between these characters.

Tell us why everyone should read comic books?

There's pretty much a comic book out there for every taste. Super heroes, sure, but there are also action, horror, sci fi, romance, slice of life, and pretty much any other kind of story you can think of. There are comics for kids, comics for all-ages (like Terrible Lizard), and comics for mature readers. There are so many choices and so many different stories to read, I think it is a great time to read comics.

Terrbile Lizard is scheduled for release April 29 and is featured in the DBD April 2015 Sales Kit.
